BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. -- An unusual recycling program at Avery's Creek Elementary School. Duke Energy is showing students what's inside a 30-year-old refrigerator. There's foam, metal, plastic and much more. Ninety-five percent of that can be recycled. Since Duke started its program in 2010, almost 80,000 refrigerators and freezers have been recycled. "That it helps the community have less trash and it makes more energy efficient things by using things they are recycled in the recycling box," fourth grader Trinity said. "I learned that the refrigerator equaled taking two cars off the road every year, which is pretty fascinating for me," fourth grader Otto said. They also talked about recycling at home as well as what they can do to conserve energy. They came up with ideas like turning off the lights and unplugging electronics when they aren't being used.
