The homemade telescopic IR wand I use with my Wiimote whiteboard. Very handy to point and click on very large displays. It started out as a 12V retractable cord cell phone charger, a telescopic pointer pen and a Vishay TSAL6400 infrared LED. All the components inside the charger were desoldered, and a 1.5V LR1 battery was installed inside the lighter plug, where the fuse used to sit (with some fancy Dremeling). The charger plug was cut, the thin wire threaded through the entire telescopic pointer, soldered to the LED which was glued to the removable plastic tip. A push button was hot-glued to the back of the charger's shell. The charger body and telescopic pointer were mated to each other with a hand-shaped Polymorph (polycaprolactone) plastic shell. Here you can see the reeling mechanism of the retractable cord charger.
