Castaner reopens Strasbourg Christmas market

(14 Dec 2018) Strasbourg's famous Christmas market reopened on Friday, three days after a gunman killed three and injured 13 others in an attack nearby. The main suspect, 29-year-old Cherif Chekatt, was killed on Thursday after he opened fire on officers during a police operation. French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner attended the reopening of the market and met shopkeepers and spoke to police and soldiers. Castaner said authorities decided to reopen the Christmas market "for the honour of Strasbourg, for the honour of France," and invited people to come down to the market and show support. Access to the market has been reduced while extra police officers and military have been deployed to the site in addition to private security guards.
