We both started working on some projects. And actually SikhNet allowed us to use a platform to bring ourselves out there. This was the first time we put ourselves "out there" on the internet.

Kiran Rai took a trip to California, and came back inspired. She pushed us both to follow our dreams. They took on doing 3 films in 1 week and succeeded. Up until that point we were doing some things locally. But getting on SikhNet was very empowering, and it was a way to do something that wasn't for ourselves. The 2013 Film Festival was actually onKAUR. So we thought we are the perfect ones to do this. 

Neither of us thought we would take this art stuff further. We thought we would enter the contest and possible not do this kind of thing again. But the response was amazing. It was so addicting, the energy you get when you share your thoughts unapologetically. There is nothing like it.

Especially for first time film makers, the SikhNet Film Festival is a great way for the Sikh Kaum to get your voice out there. This is how we got initially recognized by the Sikh community. Aside from being active locally this got our voices out to places we wouldn't have expected. Not only did we submit films, but it was the first time I sat back and watched every other film. There were dozens of them, and I learned a lot about how people from different places approach things differently. 

It's a great experience. Aside from being one of the only female directors, I got a lot out of seeing Punjabi film makers from Punjab. That was really empowering for me because I saw that there are directors, and cinematographers, and rappers out there. I think we sometimes look at the arts in Punjab as being inferior and that's not the case at all. They had the most amazing content, and it's nice that they can express themselves through this art form. They are expressing things that we can't express because their stories are different. It's inspiring to see what it's like in the homeland.
