Brian Unger and some locals time travel to Jamestown, Va., and Death Valley, Calif., to learn how each location helped shape America. First stop: Jamestown in the 17th century. Thirteen years before Plymouth Rock, Jamestown became the first permanent English settlement in America. Now an active archaeological site, Jamestown transforms before our eyes to a time when settlers faced a myriad of hardships in the New World. Unger and his guests participate in the wedding of Pocahontas and John Rolfe, then take part in an active archaeological dig where they become the first visitors to hold a rare, 400-year-old artifact. Next, Unger travels to the surreal landscape of California’s Death Valley during the boom and bust days of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Unger and guests discover why scores of people hoping to get rich flocked to this unforgiving climate – and that it was borax, not gold, that put this place on the map, producing one of America’s most iconic household products. Unger takes the group of locals on an exclusive tour of what seems like a mirage: a luxurious Spanish Revival home in the middle of the harsh desert, built by a business tycoon, but named after the man who scammed, then befriended him.
