Cupra, the new performance brand from Seat, will launch its first official model before the end of the year – the Cupra Ateca.

Powered by a 300PS 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, the all-wheel-drive SUV can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 5.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 153mph.

It is expected in dealerships by December, with prices starting from £35,900.

“SUVs are still growing massively in popularity, but there is no car like the Cupra Ateca on the market. That is why we are confident that it is going to be a success and a great first pillar of the brand, expressing perfectly the Cupra key brand values of sophistication, uniqueness and performance,” said Wayne Griffiths, vice-president for sales and marketing.

“We are very optimistic that we will attract new customers who are looking for such a unique car, positioned between the mass and the classical premium segment.”

Fuel consumption is rated at 38mpg, with CO2 emissions of 168g/km.

The Cupra Ateca boasts more aggressive styling than the Seat model upon which it is based. Deeper bumpers, 19-inch alloy wheels, gloss black trim and four exhaust tailpipes set the Cupra apart.

Inside, alcantara upholstery with copper stitching and carbon fibre detailing enhance the cockpit.

Standard equipment includes keyless entry and start, wireless phone charger, GSM signal booster, 360-degree top view camera, eight-inch touchscreen navigation system, digital cockpit, and park assist.

The performance-centric appearance can be increased further with optional 18-inch Brembo brakes in black, Carbon Fibre exterior mirror caps and Cupra bucket seats.

A seven-speed DSG transmission is fitted as standard, along with DCC dynamic chassis control, which uses adaptive dampers to provide configurable drive modes.

The engine develops 400Nm of torque from 2,000rpm and a launch control function provides greater acceleration from a standing start.
