How hard can it be to sink a 27hp CA - too hard it seem

After somehow getting out of a 2 vs. 6 situation you would normally assume the DD that helped you through this would at least be kind of able to sink a 27hp CA that barely survived an attack from our King George V, who got sunk while he resetted the cap and chasing the CA out of it. At this point we were just a few points behind the enemy team and time was running out. I was so much convinced of this fact that our DD will manage that feed that I even thought "Hmmm, 90s left and there is still an enemy Bayern nearby with about 4/5 of his health remaining. Let's sink it so we win by sinking everything and not by points. Our DD should be able to land a single hit on that CA on it's own." Turned the ship around, managed to sink the Bayern in time, got myself Kraken and High Caliber while doing so, nice bonus. But our DD managed to screw up sinking that single 27hp cruiser. It got sunk instead. We were still behind in points at the end and lost... Turns out I was a bit too greedy. We could have sunk the CA, got ahead on points and won while there was nothing the Bayern could do about it. Just in case our DD didn't get sunk in this scenario. He could still have died. Who knows.
