An invasion of Arctic air has caused a plunge in temperatures in the northern two-thirds of the United States. The negative phase of Arctic oscillation has higher air pressure over the Arctic, pushing very cold and wet air into the U.S. As Arctic air heads south, warm air is forced north over the cold air, forming rain. The air is still cold at the surface, causing rain to freeze on the way down through the atmosphere, which in turn causes temperatures to drop even lower. SOURCE: Yahoo News, AccuWeather
