The discontinuation of compulsory military service in Germany also means an end to a parallel system of civilian service by school-leavers. It will be replaced by a new voluntary system in July 2011.But it remains unclear whether the current 90,000 youngsters participating in the civilian service program can be completely replaced through the new scheme.
