China critical of Japan's new defence guidelines

(18 Dec 2018) China said it is "strongly dissatisfied" with Japan's newly-approved defensive guidelines and criticised Japan for making "groundless and irresponsible accusations against China." Japan plans its first aircraft carrier and big increases in defence spending and weapons capability in the coming years, according to new defence guidelines approved Tuesday that cite its need to counter potential threats from North Korea, China and other vulnerabilities. Defence officials said Japan needs higher deterrence and increased missile defence and fighter capability as North Korea's missile and nuclear threat remains unchanged in the absence of concrete steps to dismantle them, and China's maritime activity has grown increasingly assertive. During Tuesday's regular press conference, Hua Chunying, China's foreign ministry spokesperson, said the new guidelines are not helpful for China-Japan relations. Hua called for Japan to be "cautious" in military and security fields.
