Hong Kong markets up as full US midterm picture yet to emerge

(7 Nov 2018) Asian shares were mostly higher Wednesday as investors awaited results from the US midterm elections, which could have an impact on the global economy and trade. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index in early Monday trading jumped 0.6 percent to 26,284.13. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 added 1.3 percent in morning trading to 22,428.20, while South Korea's Kospi gained 0.5 percent at 2,100.47. The Shanghai Composite fell 0.1 percent to 2,656.56. At the time of writing, Republicans were projected to remain in control of the US Senate while the Democrats took control of the House of Representatives. The results of the vote could affect US and global trade, economic and security policies.
