Manodharma (spontaneous improvisation) is the very heartbeat of Indian classical music. While great krithis (compositions) beautifully convey the "grammar" of a raga, the real "literature" and adventures lie in improvisational music. Kalpanasvaram is the one of the key methods to communicate raga. Many great musicians have developed unique styles in this facet of music, and there are several techniques to practice and hone this art. One method of kalpanasvaram practice is to travel "locally" in "regions" but traverse the entire range in one long round. Here is an example in Raga Hemavathi.
