Germany is facing a shortage of teachers. Around 20,000 positions are currently vacant and with 300,000 teachers preparing to retire,the situation is expected to get worse before it gets better. Germany's federal states,which have a large degree of autonomy when it comes to education policy,are now competing to attract new teachers. Baden-Württemberg,Hamburg and Hessen have all launched aggressive advertising campaigns. But critics fear that the competition gives the richer states an unfair advantage over the poorer states and brings into question the very fabric of Germany's federal system. We take a look at Germany's teacher shortage.
