Liverpool Cathedral is one of the largest church buildings in the world and one of the most ambitious examples of Gothic Revival architecture completed during the 20th century. Designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, construction began in 1904 and continued for decades before the cathedral was finally completed in 1978. Its enormous tower, vast interior spaces, stone vaulting and commanding position above the city create a scale intended to rival the great medieval cathedrals while using modern engineering to realize a distinctly modern monumental church.
