Kitty City was conceived as a cage less, safe, indoor-outdoor environment for cats. They are a no-kill facility where every feline guest is examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, and spayed or neutered. Starting May of 2010 all Kitty City cats that are taken to our vet to be spayed or neutered are also micro chipped.

Kitty City residents enjoy a full range of indoor and outdoor play areas to explore. This also allows for visitors to interact with the cats rather than viewing them in a cage, and it allows the visitors to gain a better idea of each cat's personality. 

The KATO Foundation originated as a New Mexico state wide vehicle to provide humane care for cats in a no-kill environment while waiting for adoption. As a 501c3 non-profit organization, donations to KATO Foundation's Kitty City may be tax deductible.

Kitty City is located next to Pueblo Pipe and Steel inc. at 56 Danley Ranch Rd Alamogordo, NM 88310

Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8a.m. to 5p.m., and Saturday 8a.m. to 12p.m. Visits can be made during off hours by appointment only.

If you're visiting Alamogordo, be sure to visit Petsense the humane pet store located at 805 N. White Sands Blvd., where you can meet more of their adoptable cats. 

Years ago I saw an episode of Must Love Cats and Kitty City New Mexico, a cat rescue in Alamogordo, NM, was featured.  As a UNM Lobo, I was immediately interested in the fact that this shelter was in New Mexico.  And then I got even more excited because of the shelter's approach to "cat shelter life".

So I reached out to Ed Denton, operator, for an interview for our site.  You can read Floppycats interview with Ed Denton of Kitty City NM here.

In October 2013, I had the fortune of being close enough to Kitty City NM that I could go for a visit with my friend, Diane.

Ed runs an impressively clean operation.  And has a new building in the works that he showed us - it was very impressive.

I would have no reservations about adopting a kitty from Kitty City NM - many of the cats Ed rescues from the kill shelters - so that they have a chance of finding a good home.

There is a Ragdoll cat that is looking for a home - she has no teeth and no claws on any of her paws.  Ed believes she was declawed on all 4 paws and then used her teeth, since she didn't have her claws and that her owner then had her teeth removed.  Awful.  But she seems relatively happy - and Ed says that she's an old gal - maybe 15 years old.
