For the short film The Lift we needed to make some fairly large explosions for compositing with a model car for a scene involving a car exploding. Here is the raw footage showing what was achieved. Made using gunpowder (shotgun catridges and fireworks) filled cardboard pipe bombs (1 inch diameter) and open bags of petrol placed on top of the bombs in a small hole in the ground. Triggered by remote detonators from a 12v Motorcycle battery. By all means try this at home but do take precautions and assess the risk! Pyrotechnics courtesy of Steve Holman.
