This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. We think we are rational beings who think out decisions carefully, but most of the time that is just not the case. Corporations carefully gauge public opinion to ensure their message is in line with public perception. Public policy decisions often have a huge impact on the economy and the environment but often the public is kept at arms length. As the stakes rise, how do we make effective decisions about important issues such as GMO's, pipelines, oilsands etc. when it seems emotions rule the day. Raised in Penticton, Michael Brydon is a tenured associate professor in the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University. Michael has earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from the Royal Military College of Canada and a doctorate in business administration from the University of British Columbia. He brings to the First West board a unique and valuable mix of academic expertise and practical experience. Michael is actively involved in his community. He was elected to represent West Bench/Okanagan Lake West on the board of the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen in 2008, and was returned to the position in 2011. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
