We are on the verge of creating emotionally sentient systems from applications in healthcare and education to self-driving cars and voice control digital assistants. How do we get there, and what are the ethical implications? There are many design aspects and challenges to creating an emotionally sentient system. Researchers need to build machine learning algorithms that can turn facial expressions or voice tone into emotional labels. Recent technological advancements in both machine learning and connectivity of the internet have allowed researchers to collect much larger sets of data than they had previously, allowing for more robust systems that approach the level of “emotional sentience.” In the December issue of Communications of the ACM, Daniel McDuff of Microsoft Research discusses these issues in “Designing Emotionally Sentient Agents” (https://cacm.acm.org/magazines/2018/12/232878-designing-emotionally-sentient-agents/fulltext).
