Lights shine on Capitol Christmas Tree

(7 Dec 2018) The U.S. Capitol Christmas tree is lit by House Speaker Paul Ryan with the assistance of Brigette Harrington of Hillsboro, Oregon who won an essay contest about Oregon's outdoors and the role to light the tree. This year's tree comes from the Willamette National Forest in Oregon. The Capitol Christmas tree has been a tradition since 1964. House Speaker made remarks about the joy of Christmas and recognized the passing of the 41st president George. H.W. Bush He said, "I think we're reminded because of just what we did here this week in the Capitol of the fact that we lost a giant in our nation this week. and the loss of George H.W. Bush was great sorrow. But it also reminds us of a man who was a beacon of joy.
