In the 1990s,Sörmland county in Sweden was still in decline. Then the highway to Stockholm was built,a university was founded, and large investments were made in research and development. The nine municipalities in Sörmland now compete for the lowest taxation rates, the highest job creation figures, the highest wages, the cleanest air,and the best-educated children. The result is that many new companies have moved into the county and population figures are once again on the rise. While the unemployment figures increased slightly in recent count, the rate is still only 2 percent. With its model of sustainable development, the Sörmland region seems to have found a way to prosper even during the time of financial crisis.
