FIGHTING BACK: Longtime Watch Group Keeps Neighborhood Safe

BEAVERCREEK The Mardella Neighborhood Watch group is the longest running watch program in all of Beavercreek, and they believe their efforts have gone a long way to stopping crime before it starts. Mardella Drive is considered a peaceful area, but that tranquility isnt just happenstance, the people living in the houses that line the street are a powerful force to keeping the area safe. There was a garage broken into years ago, shortly after that we decided to start a neighborhood watch group said Greg Mohney, Mardella Neighborhood Watch Member. The organization formed 17 years ago, and the close group of neighbors is still going strong. I must say, these neighbors are very good about looking out for each other said Nancy Weston, Mardella Neighborhood Watch Member. Every day the Mardella Neighborhood Watch is on the lookout for anything unusual that could lead to trouble. They hold regular meetings and send newsletters to the 16 families who are part of the group. It made me more aware to start paying attention to other peoples houses said Mohney. Part of the watch groups long-term success can be linked to its close relationship with police. However, these seasoned watch men and women know where to draw the line with their own enforcement. They are only an extra set of eyes and ears for police to better nab criminals in the act. Its a tremendous asset for us and citizens because we can quickly do our jobs and get it taken care of in a very efficient manner said Captain Jeff Fiorita, Beavercreek Police. 17 years and counting, the Mardella Neighborhood Watch is proud to serve as a lasting example of a community fighting back against crime. While watch groups dont necessarily have to get police involved, successful programs like the one in Beavercreek often do. Also its important to never take the law into your own hands. Watch groups just report the crime, not deal with it personally, that should be left to authorities.
