This has been documented before. But I thought I'd demonstrate just how impossible it really is to escape to the world map before finishing the initial quest at the Academy. As far as I can tell there is no way to do it at all. There's one small exception. And that's traveling directly to Dezolis via warp codes or warping to the Spaceport and using the shuttle. That will let you go on from Kuran and continue the game that way. But it renders the Motavia world map impossible to traverse at all. Even if you use the Landale to go back you will immediately be taken to Piata and told you cannot leave. I haven't tried Rykros but I assume it would be much the same. Plus, the Motavia Spaceport will never appear on the map unless you defeat Zio anyway.

Using warp code FFEC29:3c and the ever handy walk through walls (for convenience) I warped to the tool shop in Krup and picked up a telepipe. Upon exiting Krup I was quickly whisked from the world map back to Piata to be chewed out by the guards. I'm assuming the text you get would be available if you grinded Chaz until he learned Ryuka and attempted to escape to the outside. This text effectively breaks the guard's text boxes, rendering them blank. They are fixed upon entering and exiting any building. I don't know if using ryuka causes the same blank text boxes. I tried this on the early translation prototype ROM and got the same thing. So it's not the patches doing it.

You cannot telepipe back to Krup because the game doesn't think you've been there. Towns have to be entered from the outside to appear on the teleport list. The only exceptions I've seen are Piata, Raja's Temple and the Silence Temple. But you have no choice in being sent to the first two. And the Silence Temple also doubles as the Rykros Spaceport and your initial destination on that planet. It's the only place there you can fully recover. So it would be really bad if you were near death on the Rykros world map and needed to teleport back to the temple. So I guess they are automatically set to show up on the teleport list. I'm wondering how that works.

Anyway, that's it. Trapped in Piata until you finish what you are there to do. Not sure how it works. Is the world map one big Piata warp zone? I guess it's a failsafe to keep you from learning ryuka or cheating in a telepipe and wandering all over the place sequence breaking.
