The latest WHO World malaria report reveals a plateauing in numbers of people affected by malaria for the second consecutive year: in 2017, there were an estimated 219 million cases of the disease compared to 217 million the year before. The 2018 report has been launched in conjunction with a new high impact approach to jumpstart progress against malaria, focusing on the 11 countries that account for approximately 70% of the global malaria burden. In his video message, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlights the key elements of the high impact response and calls for urgent action in the high burden countries.
