EU Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmström announced on Wednesday that the European Commission is set to intensify its assistance to Italy to help it deal with its immigration problems.

“This operation should succeed and we hope that it can be in place end of November; it should count on more human and technical resources and more member states participating. As you know there are no European border guards, planes or ships so the success of this operation will depend on the contribution of EU member states.” Malmström said.

The civil war in Syria and breakdown of order in Libya have pushed the number of sea-borne arrivals in Italy to a record of more than 100,000 this year, straining the resources of its navy and coastguard.
