Harriet Tubman's first rescue was that of her niece Kessiah Bowley, who was being sold into slavery with her two young children. Tubman arrived in Baltimore, where she was hidden by her brother-in-law until the time of the sale in Cambridge, Maryland. A plan was devised to help Bowley and her family escape; they traveled 60 miles from Cambridge to Baltimore on a log canoe. Once in Baltimore, they joined Tubman who led them safely to Philadelphia.
