Hi there, Eric Bakker, thanks for coming back. Let's talk about FLDP, functional liver detoxification profile, or functional liver detox test. There are many ways that you can assess the body's ability to detoxify nutrients on multiple levels.

You can do a DNA levels, not DNA, but genetic levels, for example. You can look at all kinda genetic deviations from it. If you wanna get as anal as that you can do that kinda work. I don't find a lot of benefit in doing a lot of genetic testing on people, to be honest.

You can also do a functional test in terms of organic acids that the body produces, which is a little bit different. One of the most common areas that people look at for detoxification is the liver function. The crazy thing is, they don't spend enough time looking at the kidney function. The kidneys are a very powerful pair of detoxification organs, but they're not usually looked at. It's all about liver and bowel detox. These are easier things to work on, I take it, than the kidney detox.

With the liver detoxification, I've mentioned in a previous videos about the liver's ability to very effectively break down toxins. The liver is a huge organ. In fact, it's the biggest organ we've got. It's full of blood, it's full of immune cells, it's full of detoxification capability.

The liver performs over 200 functions in the body, though one of it's most importation ones is to keep the blood in a very clean state. It will do so through a two stage process we call phase one, and phase two.

Now, phase one works by virtue of enzymes. Enzymes basically render different compounds useless. They break them down, but they make those compounds more toxic in this process. We call these intermediates, so they're intermediate between phase one and phase two. These intermediates are very powerful and dangerous for the body.

The body likes to keep these things contained, and also it likes to reduce the ability for these things to create damage, and this is where the antioxidants come in, particularly vitamins A, C, and E, and selenium, and zinc, and all the nutrients that help to reduce that kind of damage, both in the liver, and the rest of the circulation.

Phase one becomes phase two. Phase two is a little bit more complicated. There are several processes that occur, and they're chemical processes which render these toxins then water soluble or fat soluble, so you can move them out through the bile, or through the urine.

Both of these phase one and phase two pathways can be determined through a functional liver test. It's a urine test, it's quite simple to perform, and then we can see if there's any kind of problem in any or both of these stages, either one or the other. It's a good test also to perform in conjunction with the blood test where you look at the liver function markers.

We should put different liver enzymes in the blood stream that we can pick up, so often a good test to do is the liver function test done by the doctor, and then you do the functional liver detox profile through your functional doctor, or naturopathic doctor. That will give you a very good understanding of the capacity of your liver to break down toxins.

It's quite a good test to do if your trying to lose weight, or if you wanna clean up your act. If you've been drinking for some time, and you've stopped drinking, or you have a lot of junk food in your diet, if you've lived a very poor lifestyle, and you wanna really clean up your act, it's a very, very good test to do, is the functional detoxification test. It's excellent.

Ask your doctor about it, or your naturopathic doctor about it, and he or she can certainly help you out with that regard.

Thanks for the question.
