United Nations, New York, 17 February 2010 - (English translation below) More than one month after the earthquake and some one million people are still in need of shelter. In Petit Place Cazeau, a shantytown northeast of the capital Port-au-Prince, the United States (US) military is helping survivors set up tents. The shelter boxes are fixed to this location. The soldiers hope to aid 575 people here. Families are welcome in the settlements, but they are not allowed to move the tents to other locations. Survivors have so many challenges ahead. Translation: (Creole) Alexis Kethly, Internal Displaced Person (IDP): My house was destroyed. We are sleeping on the bare ground in front of the door because we were told some burglars are hanging around. Translation: (Creole) Nicolas Elianne, Internal Displaced Person (IDP): Things are changing for me. I found a place to sleep. I thank god and those who gave this opportunity. God bless them. In coordination with the Government of Haiti, delivery of immediate shelter solutions is being fast-tracked, including plastic sheeting, tarpaulins and other shelter materials. To date, more than 350,000 people have received emergency shelter materials from the UN and its partners on the ground.
