And just like the recently released Nubia X, the second screen exists solely as a means to avoid needing a notch on the device’s “face.” So yes, you’ll have to turn the phone around anytime you want to take a selfie, but the second screen will ensure you can still see where you’re aiming the camera. Although ZTE-backed Nubia beat Vivo the punch with this idea, the Nex Dual Display Edition is a more refined, superior product. For one, the Nex will actually be able to run Google apps (the Nubia X cannot), as the phone is aimed at markets outside of China. It also feels slightly more premium thanks to the curvier edges and slimmer bezels around its main, 6.3-inch screen. And unlike the Nubia X, both the front and back screens of the Nex are OLED panels, and at a higher resolution too (1080 x 2340 for the main; 1080 x 1920 for the secondary 5.5-incher). Each of the Vivo phones I’ve tested this year have boasted respectable cameras. In addition, the Nex’s camera specs appear identical to the ones found in the Oppo R17 Pro — a 12-megapixel main lens, with a secondary depth sensor, plus a third TOF (time of flight) camera that’s dedicated to 3D mapping — and I was very impressed by the R17 Pro’s offering. And unlike Oppo, whose R17 Pro’s TOF camera has no use yet until a software update, the Nex 2 can use it for face unlock. Vivo claims its facial scanning system is “better than Apple’s.” That’s a huge claim to make, and while the phone did unlock relatively fast from my testing, I’ll have to wait until I have more time with the device to decide if it’s as good as Vivo says. The new Nex also ships with Android 9.0 out of the box, albeit with Vivo’s divisive FunTouch software skin on top. From my early testing, the software ran without any hiccups and I was able to switch between the two screens (achieved with a three finger horizontal swipe) easily. And because Chinese brands continually feel a need to overstuff the spec sheet, there’s 10GB of RAM here, paired with the expected Snapdragon 845. Unlike Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 3, which only offers 10GB of RAM in the premium edition, the Nex comes with 10GB of RAM as standard. I don’t think there’s really a need for 10GB of RAM on a smartphone right now, but I’m not going to complain about getting more of something. In fact, tech media dismissed 6GB of RAM as overkill a couple of years ago, and now phones without at least 6GB of RAM feel noticeably slower. We may just need 10GB of RAM by late 2019.
