What does it take to become great at sales? What 2 things I should focus on to become a great sales professional? What do great sales professionals do that I can replicate? Have you had such thoughts? If not, then good luck with your sales career (Smile) If yes, then let me share my observation and experience! 2 things to focus on to become a great sales professional - Closing Prospecting - Pipeline Most important aspect - Closure: It’s no secret, if you can close big then you are a good sales rep. This is the MOST important aspect for any sales rep. Nothing else matters than a closure. (This is a bigger topic and will cover in coming articles). Let us focus on prospecting today Second important aspect - Building pipeline: It could be the no. 1 aspect depending on how you look at it. Lot of sales reps fail to shine to glory because they fall in a trap of being average. (refer – Average is a failing formula article). They stop building huge pipeline and keep running with average number of deals and pray for it to close! Why do you not have a monster pipeline? Because you don't have enough meetings. Why? Because you hesitate to make cold calls, Why? Because you don’t send enough emails, Why? Because you don’t leverage social media, you don’t use reference enough, you don’t do enough follows. Not having enough activities to generate lots of meetings is the root cause of not having enough pipeline and it is road to failure! 3 Types Sales Folks: Dryers – These are the sales folks having 1 or 2 opps and praying to god for closures. They make all the excuses in the world to justify why they have low pipeline. For instance, Market is not good, Economy is not good, Product is not good, Price is too high, Cats can't fly…and god knows what. May god be with you! Averagers – These are the ones with 4-5 opps and feel they have done good enough job! Happy & satisfied with their efforts. Their boss feel that he is doing good as well! Monsters – These are the players having more than 10 opps and few of them will definitely close (Of course the quality of the pipeline matters. Don’t create GOCHI opps) Which category is the most dangerous place to be in? You may feel it is Dryers but in my opinion Averagers is the most dangerous one. Reason, Dryers are quite evident. You identify the reasons why they are not doing well and fix it but an Averager keeps himself/herself afloat by convincing self and the boss that he/she has great qualified pipeline and will do great for the month/quarter. Inside they know the reality (quality of pipeline)…you know what I am taking about. Averagers are still riding on failing formula! :) What is a Solution: “Build a MONSTER pipeline that PUKES revenue” High level of activities Get more appointment setting people Work on your prospecting skills Work on your probing skills to uncover opportunities (Stick to their business problems 70% of the time – Watch a video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DivLR58Y0AI) Call to Action: Existing Base - Call them today.
