VR Pendolino 976; Turku-Helsinki on 17.05.2017 at 7:08-8:46. This is getting onboard at Turku Central railway station.

There are two high-speed train services on the Turku-Helsinki line (coastal line - Rantarata, Kustbanan) with the Pendolino trains, reducing travel time by 20 minutes (from 1h58min to 1h38min) on the 193,0 km long railway line. The trains can reach speeds of 220 km/h, but currently, a maximum of 200 km/h is allowed on some of the parts of the Coastal Line. VR just updated the tilt system in its Pendolino inter-city trains and has also worked with the Finnish Transport Agency to remove speed limits on five sections of track to speed up the trip between the two cities.

Now it only takes an hour and 38 minutes from Turku central railway station (193,0 km) to Helsinki central railway station (0km). For me, it is more convenient to go from Kupittaa railway station (189,7 km) after visiting my family, so then it's 5 minutes less - just about an hour and a half! This new service only stops at Kupittaa and Pasila (3,2km) (1h27min or 1h26min back), skipping all the other stations (and it's 186,5km on rail between Kupittaa and Pasila!), and it is intended for commuters from Turku to Helsinki and therefore, the schedule on weekdays (no weekend services) is as follows: Turku-Helsinki 7:08 - 8:46 (Kupittaa 7:13, Pasila 8:40). Helsinki-Turku 16:10-17:48 (Pasila 16:16, Kupittaa 17:42). Unfortunately, we started 12 minutes too late, but the ride actually lasted exactly 1h33min after we started, and it was pretty fast - faster than the InterCity trains. But I hope VR will fix the problem and I hope the new one and a half our Pendolino trains will work well enough, and increase the interest in the planning and construction of the future One Hour Train, which would reduce travel time by at least another 20 minutes between Turku and Helsinki (40km shorter track - down to just 153km in total, including 75km new track from Salo via Lohja (Lojo) to Espoo) for the high-speed trains and keeping the old track from Salo via Karis, Inkoo, Siuntio, Kirkkonummi to Espoo for the local trains! The tickets aren't more expensive for the Pendolino trains on this service. VR recently decreased the prices (student tickets now 12-14€, before it was 16-21€, adult tickets now 20€, before it was 28-35€), and also, the cheap discount tickets for these trains can also be found if you purchase the tickets about 2-3 days in advance, sometimes longer (only 9,90 euros for students and adults!), further challenging the market of the slow cheap buses for 5-10 euros (these trains are now more than half an hour faster than the buses because the Turku-Helsinki buses all take at least 2h and 5mins), also, I prefer rail transport because it's much more convenient, it's faster and it's also ecological.
