The second-generation Pontiac Firebird was produced between 1970 and 1981 and saw some radical changes in power during the EPA influenced decade. In 1971, the legendary 455 cid engine first became available in the Trans Am model. Output from the 455HO was rated at 335hp. The option was discontinued after 1976 for Trans Am and Formula models and by 1979, the best-selling year ever for the Trans Am, the 6.6 (400cid) powerplant was restricted to 220hp. The owner of this mean green 1979 Formula decided to set things right by sourcing a 1975 455cid motor mated to a TH400 automatic transmission and stock posi differential. The owner reports 2,000 miles since the rebuild that includes a high-flow water pump, 7qt oil pan, 850 quadrajet carb, new valves, guides & seals and pistons. Add an upgraded front suspension, new disc brake system components, fuel tank and a serious sound system and this ride is complete.
