Originally created to prevent the wealthiest Americans from avoiding paying taxes, the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) threatens to ensnare millions of middle income families every year. In past years, Congress has protected these families through annual "patches", but Congress continues to struggle to put this year's patch in place, let alone find a more permanent fix. Decisions about whether we should reform the tax, how to do so, and whether or not to pay for any fix, will have profound consequences for the tax system and budget for years to come.

Patching, reforming, or eliminating the AMT will all require a close attention to policy and a deft handling of politics. At this policy event, the New America Foundation will host a panel of experts, from inside and outside of the government, who will present and discuss their ideas on how to move forward.
