Former ambassador remembers Bush's foreign policy

(3 Dec 2018) Ambassador Edward Djerejian, who served as a diplomat under various US presidents including George H.W. Bush, says 41st president will be remembered as one of the most consequential and well-prepared foreign policy presidents. Djerejian served as ambassador to Syria and assistant secretary for the Middle East and south Asia under President George H.W. Bush. He recounted the president's humility as being an asset for his foreign policy decisions, but perhaps a liability when it came to touting his domestic policy achievements like Americans with Disabilities Act, the Clean Air Act and negotiating a compromise with a Democratic Party controlled legislature that helped reduce a budget deficit. That compromise resulted in raising taxes, which went against a pledge Bush made when he clinched the Republican nomination in 1988. The ambassador, who is the director of the Rice Institute for Public Policy at Rice University in Houston, added that while the compromise with Democrats perhaps cost the elder Bush re-election, the 41st believed it was the right thing to do and the best for the country.
