Since 1964, the Museum of Science has presented the Bradford Washburn Award to those who have made an outstanding contribution toward public understanding and appreciation of science, technology, engineering, and math. The award, named for the explorer-cartographer who served as the director of the Museum from 1939 - 1980, and boasts distinguished past recipients such as Michael Bloomberg, Jacques Cousteau, Atul Gawande, Jane Goodall, Walter Cronkite, Alan Alda, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Listen to the 2018 honoree, Margot Lee Shetterly, author of Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win the Space Race, speak about her time researching and writing lives of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson, and how their histories have come to influence and inspire people worldwide.
