In 2000, the leaders of 189 United Nations member states adopted the United Nations Millennium Declaration, in which they agreed to achieve the Millennium Goals. These included reducing extreme poverty, hunger and child mortality; achieving universal primary education; promoting gender equality and empowering women; improving maternal health; combatting HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases and halving the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. It remains to be seen whether these targets really can be met by 2015.
