Valmont Bike Park, Boulder CO, January 5th, 2013. Promoting bicycle-racing club Boulder Cycle Sport put on a great 2013 New Year's Resolution CX Race. At least a couple of hundred racers came out for the four-race event. The every popular Boulder bicycle park is coated in snow this morning. The icy conditions will put bicycle-handling skills to the test. The Valmont course offered it's mix of twisting icy corners and high-speed descents with lots of 'Air' opportunities for those inclined. The day's racing started with the 'D' category racing on mostly packed snow and frozen dirt. Although as the day warmed up that packed snow turned to mud. That is when the Cyclocross fun really began and you started to see the mud covered bikes and bodies. From slippery ice to slimy, sticky mud this course gave it's all. This Race is also the Collegiate Conference Championships as well as the qualifier for Nationals. Many colleges from across the state came for the race. I was excite by the speed and quality of their racing and look forward to this years race season. Ft Lewis's Rotem Ishay won the Collegiate A Men category. This being his first race at the Boulder Bike Park, Rotem said, "I am stoked by the win and look forward to coming back in the summer to check out the park's dirt jumps." Many of the racers are preparing for the USA National Cyclocross Championships. This would be the final race before the Nationals and a last chance to test race tactics. Some had hoped for more snowy conditions to make the racing more difficult. The Nationals will be held in Madison, Wisconsin where weather conditions may be very harsh, fingers crossed. Many long experienced racers like the harsher conditions of winter racing. Bicycle handling skills are more important then in road racing with the harsher weather each corner and challenge, lap after lap, change as course conditions change or deteriorate. Thanks to the City of Boulder Parks & Recreation, Without Limits Productions, Boulder Beer, Polar Bottle, Bicycle Racing Association of Colorado, Boulder Mountain Bike Alliance, Zach Lee Design for their bicycle racing support. Race proceeds from the Pre-Nationals will benefit improvements at VBP and support the 2014 Nationals preparation.
