Twiggy fronts new Marks and Spencer advert

M&S brand ambassador, Twiggy, is to front the latest advertising campaign for the high street retailer, which breaks tonight (May 18, 2009).

Celebrating 125 years on the British high street, the TV work from RKCR/Y&R will break during the highly coveted ‘Coronation Street’ ad break slot.

Twiggy stars in and narrates the new TV ad, which takes a nostalgic look back from the birth of M&S and its origins as the Original Penny Bazaar right through to the modern day and the introduction of Plan A.

It showcases some of the retailer’s achievements with the intention of reminding viewers of things that were pioneered or invented by M&S, but are now taken for granted.

Highlights include the introduction of sell-by dates on food and the innovation of machine washable and tumble dryable suits.

Supported by print, outdoor, in-store windows and Point of Sale, the campaign carries the new strap-line ‘Quality Worth Every Penny’.

A series of billboards across the UK which feature “iconic” clothing and food products including items from the Autograph line, British Strawberries and a Melting Middle Chocolate Pudding.

Tomorrow, (May 19), M&S will reveal a brand new window and in-store décor scheme in celebration of the 125th Birthday with bright coloured bunting and maypoles.

Wednesday will see over 300 M&S main chain stores across the UK staging an Original Penny Bazaar offering a range of 20 different products to M&S customers for just one penny each on a ‘when it’s gone, it’s gone’ basis.

“M&S wouldn’t be what it is today without its customers. Innovation is and always was, at the heart of our business – we constantly try to look for solutions that make life a bit easier and more enjoyable for our customers, said Steve Sharp, executive director.

“It’s thanks to their feedback and ideas and our own hard work and creative teams that we’ve been able to achieve so many firsts in our history. The ad really is a fantastic way to recognise and celebrate all we’ve achieved together.”
