Wangfujing is the capital’s most famous shopping district. High-end brands line the main street and street stalls selling the standard trinkets line the alleys. Among the trinkets sits an area of food stalls. Many of them sell popular Chinese street food. Scorpions can be found wriggling from sticks, their legs and pinchers moving frantically. Most people like to take pictures, but few people are brave enough to try this snack. The scorpions are dropped into hot oil and deep-fried before being seasoned with a mixture of salt, cumin, and hot pepper. The flavor is akin to soft-shell crab or shrimp, with a more pungent, fishy aftertaste similar to a sardine.
