This demonstration shows how the transition from light to dark causes the freshly-mated female White-Streaked Silkmoth (Saturnia albofasciata) to "activate" and begin her ovipositing flight. The vibrating action is necessary to warm-up the insects' flight muscles, otherwise they will not function well enough to achieve flight. This female was placed into a large paper bag shortly after shooting this video, and began ovipositing on the inside of it within 20 minutes.
