It's an unsettling statistic from the American Stroke Association: every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke and every year. About 800 of them are rushed to UW Medicine emergency rooms where they are cared for by a team of doctors, surgeons and nurses who race against the clock. Here is the story of one patient who says he owes his life to the team at UW Medicine and to his young granddaughter.
