(22 Nov 2018) Police used teargas and water cannon in Chile's capital on Wednesday as protests over the death of an indigenous man continued. Camilo Catrillanca, a young member of the Mapuche community, was shot and killed the previous Wednesday. Police said they fired while pursuing people who stole three vehicles. Catrillanca's family said the 24-year-old was shot in the back while riding on a tractor. Two senior police officials resigned following the discovery that officers had destroyed video showing the shooting. Wednesday's unrest erupted after a candlelit vigil outside the main building of the University of Chile in Santiago. A small number of protesters left the site and blocked traffic on the main thoroughfare, the Alameda Avenue. Police moved in to break up the blockade, spraying the demonstrators with teargas and water. Catrillanca was shot in the troubled region of La Araucania, 700 kilometres (435 miles) south of Santiago His death has led to calls for the resignation of the region's governor and the country's interior minister.
