A short hike at the end of the day to Mingo Falls in the Qualla Boundary of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. This beautiful waterfall is located just outside of the national park and is an easy hike for everyone. First I took an unmarked side trail at the top of the stairs to the little-known Upper Mingo Falls. The steep trail climbs towards the brink of Mingo Falls then scrambles over rock outcrops. Upper Mingo Falls is a double-drop but only the upper ~20 foot drop is accessible without a dirty scramble. Then I returned to the main trail which ends at a bridge below the 150+ foot Mingo Falls. With the recent rain and snow the scene was spectacular. Hike was 1 mile with 640 feet elevation gain in 45 minutes.
