Green Hill United Methodist Church celebrates 125 years

Back in the days when people walked to church, there was a church about every two miles. Circuit-rider pastors served several congregations, riding horses to perhaps three churches each Sunday. The Rev. Don Sweimler, pastor of Green Hill United Methodist Church, 5801 River Road, Conestoga, says circuit riders earned about $300 a year, plus all the eggs and chickens they could eat. The congregation at the little white 1887 church with a bell tower will celebrate its 125th anniversary in a service at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.
