Ingrid Newkirk discusses the animal overpopulation crisis and why euthanasia is often the most compassionate option for homeless and suffering animals. 

"Approximately 6 to 8 million animals are handled by animal shelters in the U.S. each year. Even though some are reclaimed or adopted, nearly 4 million unwanted dogs and cats are left with nowhere to go. Animal shelters cannot humanely house and support all these animals until their natural deaths. They would be forced to live in cramped cages or kennels for years, lonely and stressed, and other animals would have to be turned away because there would be no room for them."

If you want to protect animals from this sad fate, please always adopt, spay, and neuter your animals, and get active in rescue work, foster work, and educating and inspiring others to do the same. Euthanasia is the result of our irresponsible breeding practices—we bring to life more animals than we can care for and the result is truly heartbreaking. If this upsets you don't point fingers at those giving unwanted and suffering animals a gentle and painless release from this world, and instead get active in fighting the root of the problem! Together, we CAN create a world where every companion animal has a home.
