Fishing with light tackle over a shoal of Triggerfish (Balistes capriscus).

Along with the great taste this fish fights with tremendous power on light tackle, often taking my light gear right to the brink of explosion.

Nature has designed this intelligent water dynamic eating machine with a few good weapons, the most noticeable being its “horn” or it’s dorsal spine. This spine is used mainly for defense against predators or to anchor inside a hole in order to hide or guard its spawning nest. The fish’s tough leather like skin protect the fish against predators as well as filet knifes.

Due to the abundance of Weever fish (Trachinus draco) with venomous spines that can inflict serious injuries on humans on the coastline of Algarve, the risk is present and every angler should be carefull.
