The Palace of Westminster is the seat of the Parliament of the United Kingdom and one of the most recognizable examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the world. Most of the present complex was designed by Charles Barry with extensive decorative work by Augustus Pugin after a devastating fire destroyed much of the earlier palace in 1834. Its long riverfront facade, House of Commons and House of Lords chambers, Victoria Tower and Elizabeth Tower containing the famous bell Big Ben form a monumental political complex on the banks of the Thames.
