United Nations, New York, 24 June 2009 - Noon briefing by the spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he's "deeply distressed" by the rape and assault of about 20 female inmates during an attempted escape from Goma's central prison in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Mr Ban has called on authorities there to "bring to justice" those responsible for the crimes. More generally, he has asked government to renew their efforts to bring an end to the impunity too often enjoyed by perpetrators of sexual violence.
