Myanmar: Ban calls for Aung San Suu Kyi's release

United Nations, New York, 31 July 2009 - Noon briefing by the Office of the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. The Secretary-General yesterday met with the Permanent Representative of Myanmar. In the meeting, the Secretary-General reiterated his clear expectation and that of the international community, that the government of Myanmar will give careful consideration to the implications of any verdict in the trial of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and excercise its responsibility to ensure her immediate release. The Secretary-General also reiterated the international community's high expectations that the Government of Myanmar will act in Myanmar's interests by taking timely and positive steps in follow-up to the specific proposals which he made during his recent visit to the country, starting with the release of all political prisoners.
