(21 Dec 2018) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus109308 U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that Defense Secretary Jim Mattis will retire at the end of February. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Thursday, when asked if Syria had a role in Mattis' departure, said that the two men "have a good relationship, but sometimes they disagree." "The president has a great deal of respect for Secretary Mattis," she said. "He's going to stay on for another couple of months, I think that's a great indicator of the type of cooperation they have." Mattis met the president at the White House Thursday afternoon, Sanders said. Trump said on Twitter that a new secretary of defense will be named soon. Trump's announcement came a day after he surprised U.S. allies and members of Congress by announcing the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria.
