Extract from the sleeve of The Spinners LP of the same name: ............ Marco Polo is another song about the sea and was written by Hugh Jones of The Spinners. The facts are historical enough. The Marco Polo was a clipper on the Black Ball Line sailing to Australia. Her first voyage was in 1852 and her skipper, Bully Forbes, was hated by the crew for his tough and twisty methods. To stop them from deserting when they reached Australia (where the Gold Rush had begun) he always managed to find some excuse to keep them on board ship till they got back to Liverpool. On this occasion, Hugh surmises, it was scurvy.
